Create a digital recipe card: DSD Challenge #12

This marks the twelfth and final official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  All day we've been offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - to encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #12: Create a digital recipe card based on one of the Recipe Round themes.

Earlier this year, Susan White started a series of challenges called Recipe Rounds - providing the inspiration of a food theme, and encouraging her blog visitors (and members of the DigiShopTalk forums) to scrap some memories.  Essentially it's a digital-cyber recipe swap. Participants each digiscrap a 4x6 card and then upload in to a file sharing site.  Then share the link to the site on your blog so everyone can go around to everyone's blog and download the cards. Print them up and you have a whole new collection of great recipes to try!

Susan is digi-scrapping her recipe cards using FxFoto Recipes Project CD - the easy-to-use software and digital recipe kits make designing your pages a snap.  The CD even includes pre-made templates and sketch templates from popular designers, making recipe books quick and easy for gift-giving.

Welcome to the eleventh official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  For Digital Scrapbooking Day, we're offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - which will encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally. We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #11: Use a piece of children’s clothing as inspiration for a digital project.

The inspiration you draw from the piece can be varied -- the color scheme, a pattern, or a memory of your children, or from your own childhood.  If using the color scheme, use the color dropper tool to create a color palette (then share the palette!).  If you don’t have children’s clothing nearby, search the web for examples (try GapKids and Hanna Andersson).

Scraplift Yourself: DSD Challenge #9

Welcome to the ninth official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  For Digital Scrapbooking Day, we're offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - which will encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally. We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #9: Scraplift yourself

To "scraplift" means to look at a scrapbooking project and allow it to inspire you to create another project.  You may be inspired to copy the exact layout design, element for element, replacing colors and papers, or you may choose to use the same color scheme, and design it completely differently.  The point is to take advantage of the work that's already been done to take some of the guesswork out of future projects.

So take a look through your past projects and allow them to inspire you to create something new.  Don't try to reinvent the wheel - just pick one and create something.  We won't tell anyone what a copycat you are!

Use a scan of 3D memorabilia: DSD Challenge #7

Welcome to the seventh official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  For Digital Scrapbooking Day, we're offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - which will encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally. We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #7: Use a scan of 3D memorabilia as the subject of a layout

One of the benefits of digital scrapbooking is that you can include layers and layers of papers and embellishments without any of the bulk or weight of traditional supplies.  This is particularly useful when preserving memories related to 3D memorabilia.  With today's technology and tools, it's easy to quickly scan something and add it to a memory project.  Think of the quilt your grandmother lovingly hand-stiched, or your child's favorite cloth doll, or a full-size wall poster from an art exhibit.  Each of these things can be scanned and resized to whatever your project needs.  Choose some piece(s) of memorabilia that has a meaningful story, scan it, and scrap it.

Organize & Tag Your Photos: DSD Challenge #6

Welcome to the sixth official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  For Digital Scrapbooking Day, we're offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - which will encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally. We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #6: Organize and tag one month of photos

One of the most common "pain points" of digital photography enthusiasts and scrapbookers is keeping everything organized and accessible.  Digital cameras make it so easy to take hundreds of photos, but what do you do with them once you take them?

Use this challenge to spur you into action - using your photo editing software, organize and tag one month's photos.  It doesn't matter which month you choose - just choose one and get those memories organized.

Some organizational tasks to tackle:

  • Rename the files from the default, i.e. IMG0031, to something more specific: summercamp07-jennifer.jpg
  • Decide how you want to sort your photos - chronologically, or by theme/event.  Create appropriate subfolders.  For example, if you want to sort chronologically, you may want to create a folder for September 2007 photos.  Then within that folder, you can create subfolders, i.e. First Day of School 2007, Fall Play 2007, Soccer Games Oct 2007.
  • Include dates in filenames and folder names, to make finding photos easier later on.
  • If your photo editing software allows it, "tag" individual photos with keywords, i.e. soccer, birthday, green, October, Jennifer, etc.  FxFoto allows you to search and sort photos by assigned keywords or dates.
  • Sort photos into their appropriate subfolder "homes".
  • Once renamed, tagged, and sorted, consider backing up your photos - upload to online photo galleries, print them, and/or save to CD/DVD/external hard drive.

Create a 10-Photo Collage: DSD Challenge #5

Welcome to the fifth official challenge of our Digital Scrapbooking Day celebration!  For Digital Scrapbooking Day, we're offering challenges related to digital scrapbooking - which will encourage sampling various digital techniques, as well as tasks related to archiving your memories digitally. We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #5: Create a photo collage of 10 photos

Let's face it - we take a LOT of photos.  In 2005, digital camera users captured approximately 17.1 billion images with their cameras, according to the Photo Industry 2006: Review and Forecast by PMA Marketing Research. They printed 4.5 billion of these images, and including multiple copies, made a total of 7.9 billion prints.  And, according to the 2007 PMA U.S. Digital Imaging Survey, 98 percent of digital camera households stored their digital images using various storage methods in 2006, but over 1/3 of households do not back up their images at all once they are transferred to the hard drive.

Use this challenge to jumpstart yourself into action - choose 10 photos out of your stash and create a collage.  If you scrapbook traditionally or hybrid, store it safely in an archival page protector.  If you scrapbook digitally, save the collage locally, upload it to an online gallery, AND print it out - either at home, or upload it for printing, such as through Shutterfly.  Your memories like to be remembered.

It's easy to create multi-photo collages with FxFoto's drag-and-drop technology.  No more measuring or second guessing how to format the grid.  FxFoto does all the thinking for you.

We will be posting challenges hourly, from 8am to 8pm Eastern.

Digital Scrapbooking Day Challenge #4: Create a hybrid card using a template/sketch

"Create a hybrid card" could mean several things:

  • You could create artwork digitally and print it out to make a traditional paper card
  • You could use someone else's digital artwork to print out to make a traditional paper card
  • You could edit/crop a photo or clipart digitally, and print it out to make a traditional paper card
  • You could scan something, and use the image to create artwork digitally, then upload the artwork to Shutterfly for printing.

"...using a template/sketch" means using the basic outline of a design idea to provide inspiration.  Here are some useful template/sketch resources:
