Formal Dance and a Casting Decision

It is really hard to believe that Stephanie is graduating from middle school this year and *gulp* starting high school.  Yikes!  The school tradition is a Formal Dance which was last Friday and, true to form we found the dress 2 days before.  And even better..on sale!

Stephanie loves to act and be on the stage.  Since Boston has several colleges with film programs there are lots of student film and so a couple of years ago she did a few movies. She really liked doing them but we haven't been albe to find any lately.  Yesterday she got the news that she was cast as a lead in a film this summer and of course, is thrilled.  Yeah!

We even got her curly hair to behave!

How Low Can You Go? Stir Fry Dinner

If you've been following the NPR feature How Low Can You Go? , then you know they are challenging chefs to come with a meal for 4 for under $10.  Ming Tsai, who owns the Blue Ginger restaurant in Wellesley, Mass., has a large following thanks to his Simply Ming cooking show on public television.  He came up with this dinner for $9.68!

How Low Can You Go? Another Dinner for Less than $10

Another recipe from theHow Low Can You Go? challenge from National Public Radio (NPR)....

This one's a bit labor intensive but will worth it. Since I live in NH, Spanish spices like Spanish saffron, Spanish sherry vinegar and pimenton which is a Spanish paprika aren't available so I just substituted my own spices and it was wonderful!  Probably made it a bit cheaper too! 

According to NPR the creator of this recipe is chef Jose Andres from the Made in Spain cooking show on PBS.  And his cost was $9.71

How Low Can You Go?

Last week NPR had a feature called How Low Can You Go? which challenge chefs to create a meal for 4 for under $10.  I'm really hoping they will continue it - the chef interviews were pretty interesting and the recipes I've tried were great!

Of course many of us meet this challenge every day though I must admit they were a lot more imaginative than I am.  Sometimes I find recipes that sound great but I either can't get the ingredients here in NH or they are way too expensive.  These were pretty down to earth for once.

Interestingly enough only the Navy chef really met the challenge which was to create a meal, not just a dish.  He had soup, main dish and side for $9.75.  Everyone else had just one dish but I guess adding a salad would be pretty cheap.
