Lots of Good News for FxFoto

It's been a banner week for FxFoto, much to my delight!  We seem to be on the Top Ten lists of a number of sites this week which is very exciting!

About

About.com posted a list of Top Digital Photo Software and listed FxFoto among their top ten picks. And Sue Chastain, who edits the Graphics Software section noted, "Several editions are available so you only need to purchase the features you want." How very true - you can upgrade your FxFoto as you learn more about digital photography.

Make_tech_easier_2

Make Tech Easier posted a list of the Best 101 Free Software For Daily Use and the free Standard Edition of FxFoto made the list in the category of Photo Organizer.

------------------------------------

Inside_tonic

Inside Tonic, a software blog by the folks who run the Softonic site, mentioned the list from Make Tech Easier.  And you can see us above in their first paragraph!

--------------------------------------

Web_worker_daily

Web Worker Daily made their own list - Ten Top Mini Apps Perfect for a USB Thumb Drive - ten favorite applications which are available for thumb drives/flash drives/ memory sticks.  And FxFoto is on the list - way cool! Our Portable Pictures is a version that downloads right to your U3 flashdrive.   By the way, this would make a wonderful holiday gift.  FxFoto just goes right on the drive and since it only takes up 3 MB there is plenty of room for photos.  You can take your software and photos with you when you go over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house!

These have really made all our snow and ice this week much more bearable! Even the 2 hours it took me to drive 23 miles today in the snow seems worth it!  I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Holiday Gift Ideas for Photography

For anyone on your gift list with a digital camera, here are some gift ideas.  Or maybe I should say everyone since you will find ideas for cellphones, compact cameras and even SLRs.  And when you count cell phones, just about everyone has a camera.

In no particular order....

Jellylenses_x

Jelly Lenses let you do some interesting special effects from your compact digital camera or cellphone.  A lens with repositional adhesive that you put over your camera lens to give you some cool effects – starburst, diamond or heart.  $5.99 each or $17.97 for all three from The Container Store

DiCAPac Waterproof/ Underwater Case for Compact Cameras

This is a great idea and much safer than a plastic bag – a waterproof pouch for your camera.  I’m not sure I have the gumption to test it but they say is is waterproof to 16 feet.  Even if you don’t planning on shooting underwater, this would be handy for beach trips, skiing (water or snow) or taking your camera anywhere near water like the beach, water park or even your local bath tub.  It comes in a couple of different sizes for different cameras  $33 to $35 depending on size.  I found it at Amazon but you might also try your local camera store.

Photography Classes

At your local camera or scrapbooking store or online.  Panasonic is offering Digital Photo Academy which offers courses in many cities throughout the US.  Any brand camera will do and there are three levels.

  • Beginner - 3 hours 15 students max- $50
  • Intermediate - 4 hours 15 students max - $65
  • Advanced - 8 hours 15 students max  - $150

Wallet Pix  I haven’t seen this in person but the concept intrigues me…a credit card sized digital photo album. The flyer from Bed, Bath and Beyond showed one so maybe I will vetnure out to see it later this weekend. $29.99

FxFoto Software

Fxfotoboxbig

Need some easy to use photo software?  I may be a bit biased but this is what I use …FxFoto Creative Edition.  Order the CD ($65.95) and you will get ten digital scrapbooking kits and templates.  Or order the download  version for $59.96 (without digital kits).  Either way, the software is intuitive and quite powerful.

****************************************************

In the category of maybe not very exciting but definitely appreciated…

a stack of DVDs or CDs

Backing up photos is always a good thing – encourage it by giving CDs or DVDs.  And if you need DVD burning software, here’s an easy to use free software for burning DVDs. Final Burner Free

--------------------------------------

Going over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house?  How about a memory stick/flash drive to bring all your photos along? They are everywhere, even in our local grocery store and have huge amounts of storage -  you can get 4GB for about $40 now.

One hint – get one where the clip or key ring is on the drive part not on the cap.  Take it from me, you don’t want pull out your key ring only to find the cap is there but the drive is missing.  Not a pretty sight.

Lastly, the LCD screens on camera take a real beating especially if you carry yours around in a purse or pocket.  A screen protector is a great and inexpensive idea - Giottos 1.5" LCD Protector with Microfiber Cleaning Cloth is a great gift for cleaning and protecting that screen.  Find if at a camera store or at well known NYC store B&H Photo for $7.50 or so.

Creating Templates that are FxFoto Friendly

Here's a little tutorial with all the information you need to create sketch templates than can be used with the Quick Layouts tool in FxFoto.  The templates may be made with any photo editing software including FxFoto and you may find it very easy to just add an FxFoto friendly page to all your current sketch template kits.

In case you haven't used the Quick Layouts tool in FxFoto, it lets users drag and drop papers into a sketch template.  The papers and photos are automatically cropped and placed in the page so they are layered without having to learn about using layers.  It makes it very easy to create a layout.  Elements and embellishment may be added by simply clicking on them and then arranging them on the layout. Text is added in the usual FxFoto way - open a text box and then move it to where ever you want on the page.  If you have never seen Quick Layouts in action, there is a video tutorial on the FxFoto website - Creating Layouts Part 3 - Sketch Templates.

So here are the "rules" - not really rules, more like guidelines....

Color

FxFoto uses color matching to drop papers so if a template has the same color in two different areas, the program will drop the same paper in both areas. For example, in this template by Jen Caputo (available at The Digi Shoppe) dark gray is used in several areas.

Template_by_jen_caputo

Since all the dark grays are the same color, here is what happens when I drop a red paper into one of them:

Red_paper

Design-wise you may well want the same paper in multiple ares of you template.  But if not, the colors need to be different.  You can go wild with the colors or make them more subtle - it's up to you. When I re-color templates, I tend to recolor every piece because I might want to make the different parts different colors.  Okay - I will admit to being a bit of a scrapping control freak - lol! But that is just me and you know your customers better than I do.

Here is the way I might recolor it.  I could always drop the red paper into every other ray to make a repeating patter or I could make every ray a different piece of paper.

Recolored

Edges

On each paper and photo block there need to be distinct edges.  Otherwise FxFoto can't see where the photo block or paper ends and will flood the adjacent areas with the photo or paper.  And the edges should not be feathered or blurred.

Let me show you what I mean. A picture being worth a thousand words and all! A big thank you to Cheryl McCain of The Scrapping Garden for graciously letting me use one of her templates as an example.  Cheryl was one of the first designers to create templates specifically for use in FxFoto and this template is from her More Than One collection.

Template

In the template above, the right hand photo block is open to the background which is the same color as the photo block. Below, I've circled the area that is open and enlarged it so you could see it better:

Close_up_of_open_box_2

Now here is what happened when I put a photo in the right block.  It flooded into the background because there is no edge.  It is kind of a cool effect but not if what you really want is two photos on a paper background.

Test

Now if I just draw a line to close the box like this:

Box_with_line

Then the photos end up as two photos, as they should.

New_test

Which brings up another guideline...

Photo Blocks

They don't have to be square or rectangular but for multi-photo sketch templates, the photo boxes

should be different colors.

Text and Titles

The users of FxFoto will really appreciate if if you don't have writing or journaling lines on the template.  Otherwise they may have to first erase the text before using the template.  A preview is a great place to note where a title and text should go.

File Type

What works best in FxFoto is a TIFF file (sometimes called a TIF or TFF file) because repeated saving of the image will not degrade the quality.  A PNG file will work too but if possible, it is best to avoid having your templates as JPEGs.  What doesn't works is a PSD file since it is specific to Adobe products.  You can find a brief discussion on file types and some of the pros and cons in What's the difference between JPG, GIF, PNG and BMP? What what about TIFF and RAW?"

If you are working in FxFoto software to create templates, the following steps will let you save your template as a TIFF rather than a JPG.  JPG is the default file type but in FxFoto you can save as a PNG or TIFF easily.  Click on Save and then choose Save As Image.  When you get to the dialog box below, choose the folder where you would like to save your template.  Now click on the down arrow next to the box marked Default to open the drop menu which you can see below:

Save_as_tff

In the menu choose TIFF and then click Finish.  In case you are wondering, CMYK TIFF refers to a special file type that is used in the publishing world, where CMYK determines the colors.  I would not suggest using CMYK TIFF for a sketch template because it is very large.

So, in brief,

  1. Use different colors for each shape
  2. Close your shapes with an edge
  3. Colors for photo blocks
  4. Leave writing off the template
  5. Save as TIFF or PNG file

Scrap Quick!

If you are a regular reader, you might remember my recent post Some Quick Pages.  Well the tutorial I wrote for using FxFoto with ScrapQuick pages - Creating a ScrapQuickArt page with FxFoto Creative - is now up!  Way to go Christine!

Image_14_layout_with_alpha Image_2_three_photo_layout

Both of these are ScrapQuickArt pages - Beatitude by Amy Teets with the Sinead Turner as the page artist.  I added the title ( Messy Stamped Alpha by Christine Smith ) and some journaling (Augie font). And that was it!  How easy and gorgeous was that!

I hope it get it up here too soon!  It's going to be quite a busy week here but I will try to squeeze it in!

What a way to start the day!

The following came to our support email, completely unsolicited.  I must admit I cringed when I saw the subject line  "FxFoto Compared to CS2 Photoshop".  I was thinking someone wanted me to compare the two but no, they had done that for me:

How Amazing Is Your Program???

Incredibly Amazing !!!!

Why???
I have photoshop CS2...and have used it extensively.  No one, including the multitudes who designed it, know everything about the program....  FxFoto is simplistic in nature, but more important, the degree of color transformation and features exceed that of Photoshop CS2...the user friendly interface makes it even more pratical when one considers that even if you own photoshop...most of the features will never be used...why?....because it's not user friendly and most people do not have the patience to learn the detailed structure...Your program is in the right place at the right time and, in my opinion, should be rated along side or higher than CS2.  PROOF:...I can take any photo edited in CS2 and enhance the photo to a higher degree in FxFoto!!!!!....Amazing !!!!!!...Keep up the great work.

Totally made our day here!  :-)

Re-organizing with Typepad Pages

If you are a Typepad user, have you heard about Typepad Pages? When I first heard about these I must admit I just didn't quite 'get it'.  The examples they used didn't seem to relate to me.  Maybe my Yankee we-can-just-make-do upbringing has something to do with it....Then, one day, about two weeks ago I finally figured out how I could use them.   And I found that Typepad Pages are incredibly useful and easy.

One of the things about maintaining a blog that primarily provides information or serves as a reference is that you end up adding or correcting a lot.  For instance, I often add tutorials and I want everyone to be able to find them.  If I just listed them in a post, they would get lost after a few days, buried in the Archives - I've had this blog since Nov of 2005 and there are roughly 750 posts!  So my solution until yesterday was to first write the tutorial as a post, then take the link for that tutorial and add it to a post called Tutorials which was a list of links to all the tutorial posts. [ Have I lost you yet? ]  Then that was listed in a TypeList called Table of Contents which made it easy for readers to find them.  Each time I posted a tutorial, I had to find that one Tutorials post and add a link which meant filtering my posts and then finding How to Do Stuff post or doing a search - both of which took a fair amount of time. Not certainly the worst thing in the world but just kind of a pain. The same thing with updating the A to Z Lists for Designers, Digiscrapping Sites and Fonts.  So of course, since it was so tedious, I wasn't very good about updating them.  :-P

My eureka moment came when I started the Recipe Rounds - why not put it on it's own Typepad Page?   I thought I'd try it as an experiment.  And to give credit where credit is due - Angie Pedersen's post about Typepad Pages encouraged it.   Wow -that was a good idea!  Recipe Rounds gets it's very own page which makes it really really easy to edit and add stuff (like all the cooking kit resources I've added this week).  Rather than hunting around the list of posts, I can simply open the list of pages and select the one I want. No searching around. Brilliant!

So last night I moved all the posts for tutorials and other resources that were in my old TypeList - my old table of contents - so that each has its own Page.   And I then changed the name of the Pages section to Table of Contents (if you dont change it, Typepad calls it Pages).  Lastly I got rid of the TypeList  and moved the new Table of Contents into that spot.  Simple!  And the very best part?  All I had to do to move the posts to pages was to copy and paste!!  I mean, what could be simpler?  Those long lists of all the designers and their links could simply be copied and pasted into the new Page. I think it took all of ten minutes!

Functionally it is the same and I don't think a casual blog reader would really notice...but for me, this has made editing things like the ever changing list of designers much much easier.  It gives me a stable page to plunk my resources and saves me a lot of time.  Thank you Typepad!  Want the full scoop on how to add Pages?

If you were a designer how would you use Typepad Pages?  Right now designers post their promos in a post so why not have a page called Promotions?  It would be easy to edit, easy for us blog readers to find and wouldn't get lost in all the other posts.  Or a page for Challenges or Contests???

Oh and I've started to update the A to Z Designer List and the A to Z Digiscrapping Websites list too and even thought it is much easier, it's going to take awhile....and if you notice I'm missing someone [ like maybe you or your favorite designer] please let me know at seswhite@gmail.com   Thanks!!

Digiscrapping Software Review

This month BHG's Scrapbooks Etc had a review of software used for digital scrapbooking and we're in it!

Here's a link for the pdf version of the comparision table which compares price, abilty to add plug ins and some other factors  http://www.bhgscrapbooksetc.com/images/SBEsoftware%20chart.pdf    All in all FxFoto fared well and now you can easily compare it to the other software options.

Amusing Support

Now, don't get me wrong - we love to help people but sometimes the support messages are just too funny!

Take today for instance:

"i seem to have lost my registration number and i am not even sure whether i used the email address xxxx@yyyy.com or rrrrr@zzzz.com. how stupid am i?
you don't really have to answer the last question but is there any chance you could help find my registration number?"

Our answer:  Sure no problem  And you're not stupid at all.

Some other ones:

"Do you have any suggestions for love songs for my wedding slide show?"

Our answer: well not really since we don't know what kind of music you like...but you could try typing 'wedding music' into Google and see what comes up.  Or try the Music Lyrics site.

"What kind of a dog is that? Is it friendly?  Does it make a good pet?"

Our answer: the black one is a Standard Poodle named Sasha, quite friendly, doesn't shed but he is a bit hyper - he has a 10 pound miniature poodle personality in a 50 pound poodle body.  The brown one is a Chocolate Lab named Bailey, is quite friendly but does shed and is very mellow.

"Do you let users send you examples to use in your gallery?"

Our answer: Yes, indeed.  We'd love it!

It's Very Quiet Here

Two days ago there was a huge thunderstorm  with amazing lightening.  The really incredible kind that flashes across an unususally dark sky and draws everyone to the windows to watch even if we know we should stay away from the windows. And even if it is a bit scary.  When it started, we all unplugged our computers as we always do and other stuff even if they were on surge protectors.  Good thing...lightening struck nearby. Someone said they saw it hit the pole outside which I'm glad I didn't see.  But it is the reason it is so quiet...our phone line got hit or as the guys term it, fried.  So no phones ringing or faxing machine noise which is actually kind of nice.

The bad news is that somehow it got into the cable and fried some modems.  I never even thought about unplugging from the network and neither did some others so all of us had our network connections burnt,  *sigh*  Lesson learned.  The good thing is that it wasn't as bad as we thought and new cards fixed them all.  Whew!!

But it did remind me that I really really need to be better about backing up.  I would have lost tons of photos and email and documents if the computer had died.  I know they say lightening can't strike twice in the same place but I don't think I'm going to trust my luck!!
