Digital kits include digital paper and embellishments that are similar to paper kits and are available as a download on a large number of websites either for free or to purchase. The are a huge number of websites - big ones with lots of designers and small ones with just one designer. A zillion different styles and colors and....well....if you feel the need to shop....
To download a digital kit, you may need to register on a particular website. Free kits can be found under freebies or may be listed in the store. Once you find and click on the link, you will this dialog box
This one is from a kit I downloaded from Scrap Outside the Box.
Now click on Save because you want to save them in your computer rather than just open them.
A new dialog box will open that will help you decide where you want to save the kit. It will look like this:
Kind of hard to read? ummm.... sorry. Well...basically the top line is Save In and then in blue I have chosen My Documents. Under My Docs is a list of all the places like My Pictures etc
Where should you put your digital kits?
Where ever! Just remember where you put them! [LOL] Most people use My Documents or My Pictures. Saving your kits in My Pictures is handy since your photos are there too, but the choice is yours. I have all my digital kits in My Pictures in a big folder called Scrapbooking Kits (gee...how original). Then each kit has its own folder. So when I open the Scrapbooking Kits folder, I can see all the kits I have.
Let’s say you want to store them in My Pictures. First, click on My Pictures. Then you want you can create a new folder by clicking on the folder icon with the red star and then typing in the name of the folder. Me? Here's my attempt to be organized (ha ha) - one big folder called Scrapbooking Kits then each kit folder is labeled by designer name, then kit name and then the website where I found it. As I get more and more kits I may have to revise this but for now it is working!
Just a little aside for those of you have FxFoto Creative:
Here'a a screenshot of the folder called FxFoto_Clips- this folder contains the digital kits that come with FxFoto Creative . You will find this folder in My Pictures and if you open it, it has the ten kits that
come with FxFoto. Why is it called Clips...well....the guys keep thinking of digital kits as clipart....can't seem to convince them otherwise so hence clips it is.
Once you name the folder and press Save, the download will start. Depending on whether you use cable, dial up or DSL, this may take some time! With dialup this can be particularly long and many sites offer CD burning service where they will burn a CD for you.
Once the download is complete, a box will pop up that looks like this
Click on Open and you will see the box below which has your file in a zipped format
The file has been compressed or zipped to make it smaller for downloading. In order to use the file, you will have to extract the files (better known as unzipping it). Click on Extract all files and follow the directions in the wizard boxes to unzip your file.
Now you're good to go!
