Last week NPR had a feature called How Low Can You Go? which challenge chefs to create a meal for 4 for under $10. I'm really hoping they will continue it - the chef interviews were pretty interesting and the recipes I've tried were great!
Of course many of us meet this challenge every day though I must admit they were a lot more imaginative than I am. Sometimes I find recipes that sound great but I either can't get the ingredients here in NH or they are way too expensive. These were pretty down to earth for once.
Interestingly enough only the Navy chef really met the challenge which was to create a meal, not just a dish. He had soup, main dish and side for $9.75. Everyone else had just one dish but I guess adding a salad would be pretty cheap.

Yummy, sounds good. Under $10? I must be living under a rock because I think all of my meals are way over that. I need to get on your wagon! I could save a bundle!

Interesting. I find it's hard to find something that I can get all my family to eat. Our kids are pretty picky but this sounds like something that just might do the trick.
